Welcome to the first blog from Organization Development for Dummies. There is a lot going on in the political arena regarding government bureaucracy, which has been one of the earliest organization designs and continues to be widely used today. This topic is especially relevant for anyone interested in how the impact of downsizing can affect organizational performance and improve organizations overall.
A 2023 survey of laid-off tech workers found that 77% reported worsened mental health, with many pointing to the dehumanizing nature of their terminations as the cause. This underscores the impact of downsizing not only on individuals but also on broader societal risks. Studies indicate that nearly 50% of workplace violence incidents are tied to terminations or negative work events, often exacerbated by government bureaucracy, and 29% of fatal workplace violence cases involve an employee being fired, highlighting the need for better organizational performance during such transitions.
As an academic I was training in strategies to resolve intra and inter organizational problems and disputes. Here is a view of some of those learnings and how they might be used to understand and proceed in the war in the Middle East.
The model organizes conflicts along two axes: the complexity of the issues involved, and the degree to which the parties' interests are aligned or divergent. The worst quadrant — high complexity combined with deeply divergent interests — is what organizational development practitioners have called the 'Hot Mess.'
This document synthesizes three major intellectual streams in conflict resolution — the Hot/Cool Conflict model, the Wicked Problems framework, and Beyond Intractability — and applies them to the ongoing 2026 US-Israel-Iran war. It is intended as a research reference for practitioners, analysts, and policymakers. Read more about how this conflict became a hot mess or an "intractable conflict" and how to get off the path of escalation. The escalation path is very dangerous indeed!
